The minor in Communication Studies provides Media and Communication Arts majors a broader and deeper learning experience in a variety of communication fields, which are meant to align with your career aspirations. Students outside of the MCA major are invited to benefit from a minor in Communication Studies as well. Not only will this interdisciplinary minor enhance your professional toolbelt, but many of our courses fulfill Gen Ed requirements in the Arts, Humanities, Information Literacy Enhancement, and Reading/Writing Enhancement.

The minor in Communication Studies requires 15 credits to complete. Many non-majors enroll in COM 1010 to complete their First-Year Gen Ed COM Core which will serve as the gateway course for non-majors. Students take electives offered outside of our department are required to complete all pre-requisites.

Communication and Contexts:
Demonstrate effective oral and written communication in interpersonal, small group, organizational, public and virtual contexts, and platforms.

Create a portfolio showcasing fluency with digital storytelling tools, media aesthetics, and performance practices.

Theory and Application:
Apply communication theories and basic research methods to analyze audiences, media aesthetics, media effects, and performance practices in historical and professional contexts.
