WFIRST Social Media and Outreach Coordinator and Video Producer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

Courtney Lee is making it happen. But when she started at Curry, she wasn’t even sure what “it” was. “My senior year of high school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I thought, ‘I’m good at talking and I like celebrities! I want to do something in broadcasting.’ ”

Courtney chose Curry College after visiting campus to see the production facilities and classrooms. “I didn’t realize how huge the Communication department was until I came to visit. There are so many resources. The TV studio is amazing, and I love that you’re hands-on. They don’t just show you, they let you do it yourself.”

During Courtney’s junior year, she interned at FOX25 after a conversation with a representative at a booth at the Student Center. At FOX, Courtney wrote Web stories, put together videos, and accompanied reporters or photographers to help them out. Almost right away, she was assigned to shadow Elizabeth Hopkins in the field. She was nervous at first, but was well prepared by the resources available to her as a Curry student.

After graduation, Courtney completed her Master’s Degree in Reporting in Public Affairs at American University, where she focused on Broadcast Journalism. She is currently working as the WFIRST Social Media and Outreach Coordinator and Video Producer at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, where she works with the multimedia team and develops content for social media accounts and the website. She also produces live shots that allow news stations to talk to scientists and engineers.

“Since working at NASA, I have found a passion for producing/production, and my television concentration at Curry has prepared me a lot for what I am doing now. It has allowed me to go into meetings and pitch ideas with confidence because I know I have the skills and experience to back them up.”
