Curry College welcomed Dr. Patrick Tutwiler, Massachusetts Secretary of Education, to campus for a conversation with President Jay Gonzalez about issues in higher education. The event was moderated by Jacquetta Van Zandt, Vice President of Engagement at the Partnership, Inc. and hosted by Curry’s Diversity Center, Black Student Union and Spiritual Life in honor of Black History Month.
“The data is clear about the importance of education and earning a degree. In my role, I’m focused on creating pathways for students realizing their dreams and higher ed is a part of that,” Tutwiler said.
A Curry student in the audience talked about her experience with Early College, a Mass. public high school program that helps prepare students with college readiness skills and offers college-level classes for credit.
Tutwiler and Gonzalez also discussed the important of diversity and inclusion in schools, and recent federal directives that could affect certain programs and policies.
“Our mission states that Curry educates and graduates students prepared to engage in successful careers and active citizenship with a global perspective,” said Gonzalez. “I know this place is doing that for our students. Talking to them, to alumni, to parents—this place is transformational for so many who come here. We are proud of our diverse community and it’s what makes us stronger.”
